Thank You Cuong Nhu

Some may know that while I was living and working in Atlanta for about a year and a half I took a classes in a martial art called Cuong Nhu. Well, that time I spent there, which I loved, turned out to be time well spent this morning.

This morning I went for a bike ride with a friend of mine, Carrie, who I knew when I lived in downtown Chicago. We rode from the Art Museum in Philadelphia, the building behind the famous steps that Rocky runs up in the movie, up north along the Schuylkill river to a bridge and then started heading back (it was going to be about an 8 mile round trip from the museum up to a bridge and back). As we were heading back we were riding along and had just come out from under another bridge and up in front of us I saw two people: one woman walking on the right hand side of the path and a roller blader who seemed a little shaky that was going to try and pass this person walking on the right. As it would turn out the roller blader did try and pass this walking woman and as fate would have it I would be passing the pair of them at about the same time. Being that there was definitely not going to be enough room for all three of us on the path at once, since I was on my mountain bike, I decided I would swerve over onto the nice grass shoulder on the left and pass the both at the same time.

Now my time spent riding paths all around the world has taught me that as a courtesy you should say something like “on your left” or “excuse me” or maybe even ring a bell, should you have one, when you are passing someone or another rider on these kinds of paths. In this instance I decided to go with a quiet “on your left” just loud enough to be heard and not scare this roller blader since she seemed a little shaky. Usually what normally happens is the roller blader just stands up straight and coasts, well this woman definitely heard me and then definitely got scared. INSTEAD of just staying where she was at and acknowledging my presence she started to flail about and suddenly jumped to her LEFT into the grass.

Please refer to the end of the earlier paragraph where you can read that this was my decision already to go into the grass and I guess you can figure out the outcome.

She swerved to the left at literally at the exact moment our shoulders were passing. We collided and my bike of course went down and she of course was spun to the ground also. (this is where the title to this post comes from) I dont know really what it looked like because to me of course everything happend at light speed but the next thing I remember is I’m going down, then I’m rolling over my right shoulder to my left hip and then I’m standing again, I executed a perfect Cuong Nhu front roll. I was instantly standing and walked back over to the woman who had knocked me off of my bike. She informed me that she had done something like this previously back in the late 90′s and had ended up dislocating her shoulder, and ripper her bursar bag (sp?) and had nerve damage. I’m of course going “OH SHIT” I’ve broken this woman again and am going to end up in a law suit because we both made mistakes. As it turns out this woman was okay and was totally cool about it. She sat for a couple of seconds and we all talked and she said it was okay to go on. She was taking off her roller blades as we rode away and was going to walk to her car about 50 feet away.

Now of course it freaked me out a little bit later when we were riding down the path and two ambulances screamed up the road we were riding next to but I’m going with the fact that they definitely weren’t for this woman and someone more injured than she, god I hope so!

So here it is again, THANK YOU Cuong Nhu! Besides what seems to be a small bruise on the inside of my right leg, probably from an impact with my bike frame, I have come out of this accident without any instant injuries. I probably will hurt all to hell and back tomorrow but that is tomorrow and what Ibuprofen is for, some of which I’ve already taken :)

Have a nice day everyone.

Bye to a Friend

I am up really early this morning to take a friend to the airport. My friend the coach of the four Chinese girls on tour with me is going back to Beijing today. She is very sick and already has had one operation and needs further care where people speak her language. It is a sad day and I am going to drive her and the girls to the airport so they can say goodbye and see her leave. This is going to be a hard day for the girls and probably for me also because the girls are going to be quite unhappy. Hopefully they will take the night off and spend some time together and get their crying done so they can concentrate on the show for the next 5 days. If you have good thoughts or prayers for Coach Zhang they would be much appreciated.

That is about it except to say that I got quite sun burned at the beach the other day. I applied sunscreen at the start of the day and once on select portions later but should have done multiple applications of the sunscreen in order to keep from getting this Pink. I was just having too much fun, the price I have paid. Hopefully most of it will turn into a tan but for now I’m using the spary on Aloe to keep the pain of people saying hi or hugging me hello down.

Double Dark

Hello Everyone,

Well it is the Monday of our double dark. I am about to jump into a rented mini-van and head to the beach with a bunch of my friends but I thought I would try and get into the habit of writing something every once in a while. Some of you, maybe most of you, don’t know that I usually only get one scheduled day off a week and for certain the artists only do EXCEPT, there is always and exception, during the final week we are in a city we get two scheduled days off and we call this our double dark. The problem with the double dark is that even though it suggests two days off in a row it also means that we are nearing the end of the city and are about to get REALLY busy after it as we prepare to leave one place and head to the next.

I spoke to my future boss on Tour, should I decide to stay on tour, yesterday and we had a good talk. I think I would still prefer to go to Las Vegas should the job be offered to me but it is a lot closer of a race than it was before. I have seen a first draft of the job description and it doesn’t look too bad but would also present some opportunities for growth for me as well. I think I’m going to have another interview sometime in the near future for Zumanity so I hope to get a little interview studying/prep in before then.

Well I have to get going and I’m going to try and put up the link to my gallery in this new format before I leave today so I had better get going.

First Post

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my experimental new format. First of all I have to say thanks to Andrew again for helping me get up and running with the new format. I still have a lot of work to do on the format so expect thing to change from time to time as I get around to it.

The tour is in Philadelphia right now and it has been from everyone says a good city. We live pretty close to site and even though we have been experiencing a little bit of a heat wave here I have avoided most of the heat because I have been on vacation.

As noted above I managed to take a vacation this city so I went to my parents house for 9 days and then to Vegas for 5. At my parents house I spent the time there doing a lot around the house and we also bought Dad a new Golf Cart so he can get back and forth from the house to the garden. Both my nieces are supremely cute and growing up really fast and I hope I can get home often to see them.

While I was in Las Vegas I took some more scuba classes. This round was more geared towards general first aid and also diving specific first aid. So at present there are more classes I can now teach besides the basic Open Water Scuba Instructor classes. Hopefully in the near future I will finish up some other first aid classes and also finish my Master Scuba Diver Trainer certification which will allow me to teach even more, including specialties.

Also in Las Vegas I saw the new Cirque show, Love, which is based around the music of the Beatles. I have a reccomendation, if you are in Las Vegas, GO SEE THIS SHOW it was brilliant! I also saw Zumanity again which is still one of the shows I like there also. While I was at Zumanity I also got a pretty substantial tour of the place wit their new Operations Production Manager(OPM). One of the reasons he was showing me around was because after the tour we started the interview process for the Technical Director position which was the position the OPM just moved up from.

In general I am very happy on tour but due to some restructuring of all the CDS tours my position of Assistant Technical Director will be eliminated and there isn’t going to be a comparible position on the tours so I am looking to move on. I will keep you all informed on what happens.

Well it is Saturday at about 3:30pm and I am running the show today at 4:00pm so I had better get going.

More to follow soon…
